Realism in contemporary film and tv dramas - Essay question
Realism has become one of most contested terms in the history of cinema . one type of realism is cinematic realism it is neither a genre nor a movement . We could question that cinematic realism is nothing but an illusion . In film history , realism has designated two distinct modes of filmmaking two approaches to the cinematic graphic image .Cinematic realism in film changes the whole concept of the film because it brings a whole other dimension into film . Usually cinematic realism is based off real life events , examples of this would have to be a film called 12 years a slave , a whole film based around slavery , it is a 2013 biographical period - drama film and an adaptation of the 1853 slave memoir , twelve years a slave by Solomon Northup , a new York state , born free African -American man who was kidnapped in Washington , D.C. by two commen in 1841 and sold into slavery , cinematic realism films usually emerges from books for example a book called " Molly's Game" , the riveting book that inspired the Aaron Sorkin film . Molly's game is a true story of Molly bloom , a beautiful young , Olympic class skier who ran the most exclusive high stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons . EastEnders is known for their dramatic endings , their ability to tell an impactful story which I consider to be surface realism , for example a character living in a council house would not own a Mercedes but instead it would seem more realistic to have an old ford ,, this is classed as a typical stereotype . Social realism is something the british have always done well , we live in a country more libral than most , where continous opinions have been often tackled through dramas , which creates more awareness . Televison has helped break down certain social barriers by educating the populace . With realism we write dialogue to tell a story and help ouurselves to tell a real life stroy , once youve become familiar with that story , you don't need all that dialogue .
